How do I get to Villa Movorin from Pula airport, Trieste airport, or Zagreb?

Pula Airport (PUY) is by far the most convenient gateway and sits roughly 40 kilometres south of Rovinj — a 40 to 50 minute drive depending on the season. We recommend booking a car at the airport with one of the major rental companies; if you arrive without one, the Brioni shuttle bus runs to Rovinj's main bus terminal several times a day, and a private transfer takes about 45 minutes door to door for around 60 euros. From Trieste Airport (Ronchi dei Legionari) in Italy you are looking at a 2 hour and 15 minute drive across the Slovenian coast and through the Učka tunnel; the FlixBus and Arriva services from Trieste central station to Rovinj run daily in summer. From Zagreb the drive is roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes via the A1 motorway and the Učka tunnel — a beautiful route through Gorski kotar. There are also six to eight direct buses a day from Zagreb's main bus terminal that take just under 4 hours. Venice Marco Polo is a feasible fourth option: 2 hours 45 minutes by car, or you can catch the Venezia Lines fast catamaran in summer (June to September) which sails directly into Rovinj harbour in two and a half hours and drops you a 12 minute walk from Villa Movorin. If you only plan to stay in Rovinj you genuinely do not need a car — the Old Town, Lone Bay and a dozen beautiful coves are all walkable from the house, and we have e-bikes and scooters we can lend.

What is the best beach within walking distance of the Old Town?

Our absolute favourite is Lone Bay (Uvala Lone), a 12 minute walk from Villa Movorin on the south side of the Punta Corrente forest park. The pebble beach is shaded by century-old Aleppo pines that lean right out over the water, and the bottom drops away gently — perfect for kids learning to swim and for adults who want to do real laps. There is a small bar with espresso, ice cream and Aperol spritzes, sun-loungers for hire, a diving platform off the rocks at the eastern end and toilets and showers run by the city. Continue another ten minutes south along the coastal path and you reach Cuvi, a string of quieter rocky inlets with crystal clear water and far fewer people. Heading the other way, the small town beach at Balota — just below the Old Town — is the most photogenic spot in Rovinj at golden hour, with smooth flat rocks for sunbathing and steps into deep water; locals jump in here straight after work. Mulini Beach in front of the Hotel Lone is a more polished option with a beach club, and Borik to the north is the largest pebble beach in town with shallow water and a big lawn for picnics. Whichever you pick, the sea around Rovinj routinely scores Blue Flag status and stays around 24 to 26 °C from late June through September.

For honest Istrian cooking without the harbour-front mark-up, our first recommendation is always Konoba Veli Jože on Ulica Svetog Križa — a low-ceilinged stone room hung with farm tools where the manestra (bean-and-corn soup), pašta-fažol with smoked pork, fuži with truffle and the daily catch grilled over olive wood are all consistently excellent. For pizza there is no debate in Rovinj: Pizzeria Da Sergio at Grisia 11 has been turning out thin Roman-style pies in a wood oven since the late 1980s, and the queue out the door at 8 p.m. is mostly locals. Konoba Batelina, a 25 minute drive south near Banjole, is widely considered one of the best seafood restaurants in Croatia — chef David Skoko cooks whatever the boats brought in that morning and you must book at least a week ahead. For something more refined, Monte (Montalbano 75) holds Croatia's first Michelin star and is worth the splurge for a special anniversary or birthday. Casual lunch favourites among our friends include Male Madlene for tiny shared plates near the harbour, La Puntuleina for a glass of wine on the rocks at sunset, Trattoria Dream for the seafood pasta, and Pizzeria Sidro for late-night slices. Markets-wise, head to the morning fish and produce market on Trg Valdibora before 10 a.m. for olive oil, prosciutto, figs and whatever just came off the boats.

Day 1 — settle in and swim. Pick up a few essentials at the small Konzum on Ulica Carrera, then walk down to Lone Bay for a long afternoon swim and ice cream from the kiosk. Have an early dinner of grilled calamari and pizza at Konoba Veli Jože — it is loud, generous and forgiving of tired kids. Day 2 — Old Town and harbour. Start with cappuccinos at Caffe Bar Viecia Batana on the main square, then climb cobbled Grisia street up to the Church of St. Euphemia; for a small fee you can climb the bell tower for the best view in Istria. Reward the kids at Gelateria Leonardo (the pistachio is the right answer) and let them feed the harbour fish from the small wooden batana boats. After a midday pool break, take the little tourist train or a 15 minute kayak rental to the Sveta Katarina island. Sunset cocktails for the parents at Valentino Cocktail Bar on the rocks. Day 3 — nature day. Drive 20 minutes north to the Lim Fjord (Limski kanal) and join a half-day boat tour from Vrsar that includes a stop for fresh oysters and mussels at Restaurant Viking on the water — the boat ride alone will keep kids glued to the rail. Return mid-afternoon for one last swim and an early dinner at La Puntuleina watching the sun set behind the Old Town. The honest answer is that Rovinj has a longer good season than most of the Mediterranean — roughly mid-May through early October — but the experience is very different at each end of that window. Our personal favourites are the first three weeks of June and the whole of September: sea temperatures are 23 to 25 °C, daytime highs are a comfortable 26 to 29 °C, the Old Town terraces are full but not packed, and almost every restaurant takes walk-ins. Late May and early October are wonderful for cycling the Parenzana trail, hiking in Učka National Park and tasting young olive oil, although the sea is bracing (around 19 to 21 °C). July and August deliver the warmest sea (26 to 27 °C) and the longest evenings, but Rovinj's resident population of 14,000 swells past 40,000, parking in the centre becomes effectively impossible and the most popular restaurants need to be booked four to seven days ahead. Staying at Villa Movorin insulates you from most of that — you have a private parking slot, our shared pool when the beaches feel busy, and we send a pre-arrival WhatsApp 48 hours before check-in with a daily reservation strategy. We genuinely do not recommend visiting between mid-November and mid-March: many restaurants close for winter, the bura wind can be cold and sharp, and the magic of swimming under the bell tower is gone. Easter to early May is a quiet, low-cost shoulder if you are happy with sweaters and long lunches indoors.
